60 Days of Code: The Ultimate Blockchain Playground for Parachain Wizards

The blockchain revolution is upon us!

With what was initiated by Bitcoin, has now spawned an intricate blockchain ecosystem with countless independent networks vying for dominance.

Even many have started to wonder which one will emerge victorious and leave others in the wake. In fact, it has become a prevalent belief in the industry that there will not be just one winner.

Blockchains are verticalizing, and we need interoperability

Imagine if you had to use a different credit card for every store you shop at. One card for Amazon, another for Flipkart, a third for Snapdeal, and so on. It would be pretty inconvenient, wouldn't it? You will have to keep track of multiple cards and remember which one to use for each store.

This is also true of blockchains (plural), which face similar issues.
Blockchains are continuing to grow and each of them is designed differently. One blockchain might be good for NFTs while the other blockchain might be good for transferring money.

But the problem is that these blockchains are siloed and can’t speak to one another. You can’t do things like sell Bitcoin on the Ethereum Network or add Bitcoin to an Ethereum smart contract. The ultimate goal is to enable effortless movement between blockchains as we switch between the internet tabs today– without any hassle.

This is precisely where the concept of interoperability comes in.

Interoperability allows different blockchains to integrate and interact seamlessly, thereby facilitating the exchange of data and assets between the chains. The result is an efficient and simpler system for both individuals and enterprises.

The future is multi-chain and so the wise thing to do is to plan with interoperability in mind.

Interoperability in blockchains

Thankfully, Polkadot offers a novel path to this future.

Polkadot has “interoperability” in its DNA. It is a “blockchain of blockchains” that is designed to support other blockchains.

It is that kindergarten teacher that says that all the kids are equally special in their own way. Except the “kids” are massive blockchains.

You can think of each blockchain as a dot, and the Polkadot blockchain as a pattern made up of these dots.

When Gavin Wood (Co-founder of Ethereum & Polkadot) first wrote the Polkadot whitepaper, he argued that crypto needed a new system for allowing interactions between different blockchain networks.

To address the limitations hindering Ethereum’s growth and scalability, Wood attempted to solve this problem with a new blockchain, based on a nominated proof-of-stake (NPoS) validation system.

Now more than ever, it's time to focus on creating a more thought-through ecosystem from a connected decentralized Internet perspective. Polkadot's technology is precisely what we need to achieve this goal.

In our first and second developer bootcamps, we worked on enabling interoperability through the Open Application Network. Our focus back then was also on interoperability through the concept of open apps. Open apps are nothing but web extensions that can decentralize processes in existing applications. This approach allowed us to achieve interoperability by enabling communication over multiple platforms.

The blockchain ecosystem is thriving, and enabling interoperability among blockchains seems to be the next crucial step. Thus, we once again come back to interoperability, with our 60 Days of Code, in collaboration with Polkadot. This seemed like the next logical step to continue our efforts to create a more interconnected and decentralized ecosystem.

More on this later, but first, let’s explore what Polkadot brings to the table and why you should pay attention.

Why build on Polkadot?

Interoperability isn’t the only reason why Polkadot is worthy of your consideration.

It takes the burden off the shoulders of developers for having to build everything from scratch. Since it serves as a blockchain for blockchains, you can easily interact with other blockchains that are a part of the Polkadot ecosystem, thus simplifying the innovation process.

It even takes an extra step in providing a framework for building blockchains. You can get your own customized blockchains (called, parachains) up and running in as little as an hour.

Additionally, developers can easily connect to the polkadot ecosystem and enjoy the benefits of their shared security model, allowing them to focus on building applications without worrying about security.

Substrate– the blockchain development framework that powers Polkadot makes it easy to ensure all the pieces of your new chain can connect easily. They also make them easy to build, as you can pick from a box of features (called pallets), and almost like a Lego construction, just add the pallets you like, and voila, a customized parachain.

And these are just a few reasons why Polkadot seems to be the top choice today among developers. The complete list is too long.

Polkadot is a game changer and as a developer, learning how to build on Polkadot is a skill that will make you stand out from the crowd.
